Damongo: GES opens 2-day pregnancy support & re-entry sensitisation forum
Savannah Regional Director of Education, Mr Mumuni Mbonwura Francis has called on teachers, parents, chiefs, religious bodies, women groups, professional bodies, and all relevant stakeholders to be involved in the support and sensitisation of children against teenage and unwanted pregnancies.
Speaking at the opening of a 2-day pregnancy support and re-entry sensitisation forum at Damongo in the Savannah Region on Monday 16 August 2021, Mr. Mumuni Mbonwura said “Teachers, parents, chiefs, religious bodies, women groups, professional bodies, and all relevant stakeholders to be involved in the support and sensitisation of children against teenage and unwanted pregnancies”.
Whilst expressing gratitude to the national headquarters, facilitators, participants, government of Ghana, and other stakeholders, Mr. Mumuni Mbonwura explained that “due to Covid-19 pandemic, the Ghana Education Service initiated interventions geared at responding to the various worrying issues affecting the enrollment of boys and girls in schools. These programmes have been implemented at the various levels of education in Savannah Region”.
He added the focus of the programme has been on sensitisation of identifiable stakeholders on how to get our children back to school as well as how to prevent pregnancies amongst school girls, and for those who become pregnant, how to facilitate their re-entry into school after child birth.
He noted that “Today’s forum is geared towards the guidelines on how to carry out these programs”.
Mumuni Mbonwura commended various institutions and stakeholders for the valuable roles they play in supporting the back to school program.
“The Savannah Regional Education Directorate recognizes the great roles play by teachers, traditional and religious bodies, non governmental organizations, women groups, and many others whose efforts contribute to the success of the back to school advocacy campaign”.
He assured that the Ghana Education Service is open to more ideas to help the campaign succeed.
“I wish to assure all participants of a peaceful engagement and hope that you will continue to play your roles effectively as stakeholders of education in proferring ideas to help the campaign see the day of light”.
The Regional Director’s speech was delivered by Mr. Iddisah Seidu, the Savannah Regional Education Human Resource Manager.
The two day regional forum will saw participants being taken through the guidelines for prevention of pregnancy among school girls and facilitation of re-entry into school after child birth, causes of teenage pregnancies, story sharing, what should be done to stop teenage pregnancies, the Ghana Education Service’s response to issues or action plans, targets and strategies, among others.
The forum is being attended by participants from the GES, Ghana health service, NCCE, CHRAJ, traditional and religious bodies, women groups, among other stakeholders.
