EC to shift 2024 election from Dec 7 to Nov 7

Jean Mensa, Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, has suggested moving the date for both Presidential and Parliamentary elections from December 7 to November 7. This proposal was presented during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Monday, January 22, 2024.

The Electoral Commission is also advocating for election days to be recognized as national holidays. By declaring them as such, the Commission believes it will promote greater civic engagement and help develop a stronger democratic culture.

These suggestions have been put forth by the Electoral Commission to spark discussions about potential improvements to the electoral process.

Recently, the Seventh-Day Adventist Church proposed a change to the election date. In a petition to the Electoral Commission and the Attorney General, the church expressed concern that the December 7, 2024 voting day falls on a Saturday, conflicting with their Sabbath—a sacred day dedicated to the worship of God.

The church is recommending that Ghana’s general elections be held on either the first (1st) or second (2nd) Tuesday of November. They are seeking formal recognition to ensure their freedom to worship is protected.
