GAMLS congratulates Ghana Medical Trust Fund on first year of implementation
The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) has congratulated the management and leadership of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares, on the progress made during the programme’s first year of implementation.
In a statement issued on October 14, 2026, at its National Secretariat in Lartebiokorshie, Accra, GAMLS commended the Fund for its commitment to strengthening healthcare financing, improving access to essential medical services, and providing financial support to Ghanaians living with chronic and life-threatening diseases.
The Association described the milestone as an important step towards improving healthcare delivery and ensuring that patients receive the support they need without facing excessive financial burdens.
GAMLS Applauds Recognition of Medical Laboratory Services
A major highlight of the Fund’s implementation, according to GAMLS, is the de-bundling of service tariffs, including medical laboratory fees, under the programme.
The Association noted that the development would promote transparency in healthcare costing by identifying individual service components and ensuring that medical laboratory investigations receive appropriate consideration in healthcare financing.
GAMLS said the explicit recognition of laboratory services in the programme’s tariff structure was a welcome development that reinforced the critical role of medical laboratory investigations in patient care.
It explained that medical laboratory services are indispensable to accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, disease monitoring and improved clinical outcomes.
According to the Association, giving appropriate recognition to these services would help strengthen the contribution of Medical Laboratory Scientists to the healthcare system while supporting evidence-based clinical decision-making.
Call for Sustainable Funding and Timely Reimbursement
While commending the Fund’s leadership for the progress achieved, GAMLS has called for sustained investment and stronger collaboration with relevant professional groups to ensure that the programme remains responsive to the needs of patients and healthcare providers.
The Association also advocated sustainable funding, transparent reimbursement mechanisms and the timely settlement of claims for services rendered, particularly medical laboratory investigations.
It stressed that efficient reimbursement systems were essential to sustaining the delivery of quality diagnostic services and ensuring that healthcare providers could continue to meet patients’ needs.
GAMLS maintained that laboratory investigations underpin critical clinical decisions, making it necessary for their financing and reimbursement to receive adequate attention within the programme.
GAMLS Calls for Stronger Collaboration
As the Ghana Medical Trust Fund consolidates its achievements, GAMLS has expressed its readiness to deepen collaboration with the Fund to advance equitable access to quality diagnostic services and strengthen healthcare delivery across the country.
The Association encouraged continued engagement between the Fund’s management and professional healthcare groups to address implementation challenges and promote policies that improve patient outcomes.
It noted that closer cooperation between the Fund and the medical laboratory science profession would help ensure that diagnostic services remain an integral part of efforts to expand healthcare access and provide financial protection to vulnerable patients.
Commitment to Equitable Healthcare Access
GAMLS reiterated its congratulations to the management of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund and all stakeholders involved in the programme’s implementation, wishing them continued success in achieving the Fund’s objectives.
The Association expressed optimism that sustained commitment to healthcare financing, quality diagnosis and appropriate treatment would contribute to building a more accessible and equitable healthcare system.
It emphasised the need for a healthcare system in which quality diagnosis, appropriate treatment and financial protection are accessible to all Ghanaians.
The statement was signed by Dr. Solomon Kwashie, General Secretary, and Dr. Eric Kofi Aidoo, President, on behalf of the leadership and members of GAMLS.
For further information and engagement, the Association directed the public to its Public Relations Officer, Dr. Gloria Amegatcher, on 0542982440.
