Ghana Gas partners Ellembelle District Assembly to launch Eco Brigade Programme for cleaner beaches
Initiative Targets Cleaner Beaches and Improved Livelihoods
The Ghana National Gas Limited Company (Ghana Gas), in partnership with the Ellembelle District Assembly, has launched the Eco Brigade Programme, an environmental sanitation initiative aimed at promoting cleaner beaches, reducing marine pollution and creating employment opportunities for residents in communities within its project-affected areas. The programme, which forms part of the Company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitments, seeks to improve coastal sanitation while supporting sustainable livelihoods among residents. It also demonstrates Ghana Gas’s commitment to environmental protection, community development and improved living conditions in its operational areas.
The initiative was officially launched by the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas, Ms. Judith Adjobah Blay, together with the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for the Ellembelle Constituency, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Esq.
250 Men and Women Employed Under Programme
Under the initiative, 250 men and women have been employed to undertake daily beach-cleaning activities across beneficiary coastal communities. Their responsibilities include removing plastic bottles, sachet-water rubbers, discarded fishing nets and other waste materials that accumulate along the shoreline.
The employment component of the programme is expected to provide income opportunities for local residents while encouraging greater participation in efforts to maintain clean and healthy coastal environments.
By combining job creation with environmental sanitation, the Eco Brigade Programme seeks to demonstrate how initiatives aimed at protecting the environment can also contribute to economic empowerment and community development.
17 Coastal Communities to Benefit
The programme is expected to benefit several coastal communities in the Ellembelle District, including Atuabo, Asemda Suazo, Anokyi, Baku, Ngalekyi, Ngalekpole, Eikwe, Krisan, Sanzule, Bakanta, Azuleloanu, Esiama, Kikam, Asemko, Bobrama, Asanta and Ankobra.
Residents in these communities stand to benefit from improved coastal sanitation and employment opportunities created through the initiative.
The regular removal of waste from beaches is also expected to help reduce the amount of plastic and other discarded materials entering the marine environment, while promoting responsible waste disposal practices among community members.
Strengthening Environmental Sustainability
The Eco Brigade Programme reflects the growing importance of collaboration between corporate institutions, local authorities and communities in addressing environmental challenges.
Through its partnership with the Ellembelle District Assembly, Ghana Gas is strengthening local efforts to tackle coastal sanitation problems and promote environmental responsibility in communities affected by its operations.
The initiative also seeks to encourage residents to take an active role in protecting their surroundings, recognising that maintaining clean beaches requires sustained commitment and cooperation from all stakeholders.
A cleaner coastal environment is essential not only for community health and well-being but also for the protection of marine resources and the long-term sustainability of coastal livelihoods.
Ghana Gas Reaffirms Commitment to Host Communities
The launch of the Eco Brigade Programme underscores Ghana Gas’s commitment to ensuring that its presence in project-affected communities delivers benefits beyond its core operations.
By investing in environmental sanitation and employment opportunities, the Company continues to pursue its broader CSR objectives of promoting sustainable development and improving livelihoods in its operational areas.
The partnership with the Ellembelle District Assembly further highlights the role of collaboration in delivering practical solutions to local environmental challenges.
As the programme gets underway, its success will depend on sustained participation by the recruited workers, continued cooperation among local authorities and community members, and a shared commitment to responsible waste management.
Through the Eco Brigade Programme, Ghana Gas and the Ellembelle District Assembly aim to advance the vision of cleaner beaches, healthier coastal communities and sustainable environmental protection for present and future generations.
