Ghana Gas plans Takoradi–Tema pipeline expansion
Expansion and Reinvestment at the Heart of New Phase
The Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) is set to embark on an expansion and reinvestment programme aimed at improving operational efficiency and increasing the availability of natural gas for power generation and industrial activities. The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Judith Adjobah Blay, said the strong financial performance recorded by Ghana Gas would provide a foundation for the next phase of its development. “That is the next phase beyond profit, there is expansion and reinvestment into Ghana Gas,” she said.
According to her, the company intends to channel part of its earnings into projects and initiatives that will strengthen its operations and help meet the growing demand for gas across the country.
Takoradi-Tema Pipeline Under Consideration
One of the major projects being considered by Ghana Gas is the construction of an onshore gas pipeline linking Takoradi to Tema. The proposed pipeline is expected to extend gas supplies from the Atuabo facility beyond the Western Region, creating a wider distribution network for natural gas.
The pipeline would pass through the Central and Eastern regions before terminating at the Tema industrial enclave. Its development could significantly improve access to gas for industries located along the route.
Boost for Industrial Development
Ghana Gas expects the proposed pipeline to contribute to industrial growth by making natural gas more readily available to businesses and industries outside the Western Region. Reliable access to gas is important for industries that depend on it as an energy source or as part of their production processes. By extending the gas network towards Tema, the project could support existing businesses while also creating opportunities for new industrial investments along the corridor. The expansion could also help strengthen the role of natural gas in Ghana’s energy mix, particularly in supporting power generation and reducing supply constraints.
PURC Gains Firsthand Insight
The company’s expansion plans were highlighted during an industrial tour by commissioners and management of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). As Ghana Gas’ economic regulator, PURC plays an important role in understanding the company’s operations, investments and future plans. Richard Kirk-Mensah, Head of Corporate Communications at Ghana National Gas, said the visit was designed to give PURC officials a practical understanding of the company’s activities and expansion projects.
Moving Beyond Presentations
Mr. Kirk-Mensah explained that the tour was intended to provide regulators with firsthand knowledge of Ghana Gas’ facilities and ongoing work rather than relying solely on presentations and verbal explanations. “Their visit aims to give them insight into Ghana Gas’s operations, particularly the expansion projects at their sites,” he said.
He added that seeing the facilities and projects in person would give PURC a clearer understanding of the company’s plans and activities.
A Broader Gas Network
The proposed Takoradi-Tema pipeline forms part of Ghana Gas’ broader ambition to expand its infrastructure and improve the distribution of gas across the country. If pursued, the project could connect major industrial areas along the western-to-eastern corridor to Ghana’s domestic gas supply network. For Ghana Gas, the expansion represents a shift from simply generating profits to reinvesting in infrastructure that can support long-term economic and industrial development. The company’s planned investments therefore signal a new phase in its operations, one focused on expanding its reach, improving efficiency and ensuring that more Ghanaian businesses and power producers have access to a reliable supply of natural gas.
