Ghana Medical Trust Fund unveils specialist training initiative to enhance healthcare delivery

A bold step toward better healthcare
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has unveiled a nationwide specialist training initiative aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery across Ghana. The programme seeks to equip more healthcare professionals with advanced specialist skills to improve access to quality medical care, especially in the treatment and management of chronic diseases. The initiative forms part of the Fund’s four key mandates and reflects a growing national effort to build a stronger and more resilient healthcare system capable of meeting the country’s evolving health challenges.

Strategic partnerships to build specialist capacity
The programme was spearheaded by the Administrator of the Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, through a landmark engagement with major professional training institutions in the health sector. The discussions brought together the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Ghana College of Pharmacists, and the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives. The engagement resulted in the formalisation of strategic partnerships focused on expanding specialist healthcare training nationwide. The collaboration is expected to strengthen the pipeline of highly trained medical professionals and address gaps in specialist healthcare services across the country.

Financial support for training healthcare professionals
As part of the initiative, strategic agreements were signed and financial support was provided to facilitate the training of key healthcare professionals.
The GMTF presented cheques to support the training of:
100 pharmacists
100 nurses

A new cadre of specialist doctors
The Fund noted that the intervention demonstrates its commitment to moving beyond policy discussions and taking practical steps that directly impact healthcare delivery in Ghana.

Improving healthcare access across all Rlregions
A central goal of the initiative is to ensure equitable access to specialist healthcare services across the country.
Through the partnerships, the Trust Fund aims to ensure that every region in Ghana has at least:
Three specialist doctors
Three specialist nurses
Three specialist pharmacists
within the next three years.

This target is expected to help reduce regional disparities in healthcare delivery and improve access to specialist treatment for patients nationwide.

Addressing the growing burden of chronic diseases
The GMTF emphasised that the specialist training initiative is particularly important in tackling the increasing burden of chronic illnesses in Ghana.
Conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and kidney disease continue to place significant pressure on the healthcare system. By investing in specialist training, the Fund believes Ghana will be better positioned to provide timely diagnosis, effective treatment, and long-term patient care.

The Trust Fund described the initiative as a major investment in human capital and a decisive move toward building a stronger healthcare system.
