Internet disruptions: UG cancels online interim assessment

The University of Ghana has had to cancel its online Interim Assessment (IA) for students due to ongoing internet disruptions. Additionally, online lectures at the university have been suspended until further notice.

The disruptions in internet connectivity on March 14 were caused by damage to undersea fibre optic cables, leading to a nationwide issue. The National Communications Authority (NCA) has confirmed the problem and is working to repair the damaged cables, a process that may take up to five weeks.

The impact of the internet disruptions has been felt by institutions reliant on online operations. University of Ghana lecturers have informed students that the IA will not proceed as scheduled and a new date will be announced in the following week.

Ghanaians facing interruptions from data service providers may have to wait up to five weeks for the undersea cables to be restored, according to the NCA. This estimate was given after a meeting with subsea cable landing service providers ACE, MainOne, SAT-3, and WACS, following the recent shutdown of data services affecting multiple African countries, including Ghana.
