Mahama nominates 3 for Supreme Court

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated three distinguished legal professionals for appointment to Ghana’s Supreme Court, a move that, if approved, will strengthen the country’s highest court. The nominations were made in consultation with the Judicial Council, in line with the constitutional requirements governing appointments to the apex court.

Nominees Bring Wealth of Experience
The three nominees are Court of Appeal Justices Bernasko-Essah and Amoako Asante, as well as legal practitioner and former Ghana Bar Association President, Tony Forson. Justice Amoako Asante is widely recognised for his extensive judicial experience, having previously served as President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice before returning to the Ghanaian bench. Tony Forson also brings decades of legal expertise, having led the Ghana Bar Association and built a distinguished career in legal practice.

Supreme Court Set for Expansion
Should Parliament approve the nominations, the number of Supreme Court justices will increase from the current 18 to 21. The expansion is expected to enhance the court’s capacity to handle its growing caseload while strengthening the administration of justice at the highest level.

Next Step: Parliamentary Approval
The nominees are expected to appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting, where their qualifications, experience and suitability for the office of Supreme Court Justice will be examined. Following parliamentary approval, they will be sworn into office, officially joining Ghana’s apex court and assuming responsibility for interpreting the Constitution and delivering final judgments on matters of national importance.
