Mali national dialogue wants junta regime extended

A recent national dialogue in Mali ended with recommendations supporting the extension of military rule for several more years. The dialogue, primarily attended by military representatives, suggested that Colonel Assimi Goita, leader of the 2020 junta, should be eligible to run for the presidency in upcoming elections. However, there was notable opposition boycotts during the dialogue, as critics accused the military of using the process to prolong their power.

Mali has faced multiple coups in 2020 and 2021, resulting in military control. Initially, plans were made for a transition to civilian governance through democratic elections, but these have been postponed indefinitely due to security concerns related to jihadist attacks.

In April, the military authorities tightened their control by suspending all political activities and cracking down on opposition members, journalists, and human rights activists.
