The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially opened nominations for prospective Constituency Executive candidates across Ghana’s 276 constituencies, setting the stage for another major phase in the party’s grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Reacting to the commencement of the internal electoral process, the Western Regional Communications Officer of the NDC, Richard Kirk-Mensah, described the development as the beginning of a broader political journey aimed at consolidating the party’s electoral gains and strengthening its organisational structures.
“The wait is over! The die is cast! The road to 2028 starts now!” Kirk-Mensah declared.
Building on the 2024 Victory
According to Kirk-Mensah, the NDC’s victory in the 2024 elections was the product of sustained grassroots mobilisation, sacrifice, hard work and unity among party members.
He stressed that these efforts should not be taken for granted, arguing that the same determination that contributed to the party’s electoral success must now be channelled into building a stronger and more effective grassroots organisation.
He called on party members to use the constituency elections as an opportunity to consolidate the gains made in 2024 and position the NDC for another successful electoral campaign in 2028.
Call for Peaceful and Issue-Based Campaigns
Kirk-Mensah also urged prospective candidates and their supporters to approach the internal elections with discipline and respect.
He said the contests should be conducted in an atmosphere of peace, brotherliness and unity, cautioning party members against personal attacks, insults and divisive campaigning.
“Let us campaign vigorously, but let our campaigns be issue-based and completely devoid of personal attacks, insults and unnecessary divisions,” he said.
His appeal comes as party members across the constituencies prepare for what is expected to be a competitive process to determine the next crop of constituency-level executives.
Protecting the Mahama Administration’s Legacy
Beyond the internal elections, Kirk-Mensah framed the process as part of a larger responsibility to support the administration of President John Dramani Mahama and protect what he described as its achievements and legacy.
He called on party members to support the government in delivering on its mandate and ensuring that its policies and gains become firmly established for the benefit of Ghanaians.
“We must protect and preserve the legacies of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, support his administration to succeed, and ensure that the good works and gains of this government are firmly entrenched,” he stated.
Looking Beyond 2028
Kirk-Mensah further projected the party’s ambitions beyond the 2028 elections, calling for the construction of a united and formidable NDC capable of sustaining the party’s political influence into the next presidential administration.
He said the ultimate objective should be to ensure that an NDC presidential candidate succeeds President Mahama as President of Ghana in 2029.
For him, achieving that objective requires a strong grassroots structure, internal cohesion and a disciplined membership base.
Constituency Elections as First Step
The Western Regional Communications Officer described the ongoing constituency elections as the first major step on the road towards the 2028 electoral contest.
“The journey to 2028 begins with these constituency elections,” he said, emphasising the need for party members to remain focused on strengthening the organisation from the grassroots.
He concluded with a rallying call to the party faithful: “The die is cast. The work continues. The grassroots must remain strong. The NDC must remain united. Victory 2028 is the destination!”
His message ended with the party slogan: “EYE ZU! EYE ZA!”
