Former MASLOC CEO Regains Freedom
Former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Christine Tamakloe-Attionu, has been released from custody following the Court of Appeal’s decision to overturn her conviction and acquit and discharge her. Her release comes nearly two weeks after the appellate court ruled in her favour, bringing an end to her immediate detention while the State considers further legal options.
Attorney-General Withdraws Stay Application
The development followed the withdrawal by the Attorney-General of an application seeking to stay the execution of the Court of Appeal’s judgment. On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the Court of Appeal struck out the application as withdrawn. The decision cleared the way for the acquittal and discharge to take effect, paving the way for Mrs. Tamakloe-Attionu’s release. The State has, however, indicated its intention to challenge the Court of Appeal’s decision at the Supreme Court.
Conviction and 10-Year Sentence
Mrs. Tamakloe-Attionu served as MASLOC CEO from November 2013 to January 2017. She was later prosecuted on 78 counts arising from allegations including conspiracy to steal, stealing, causing financial loss to the State, money laundering, improper payment of public funds and breaches of the Public Procurement Act. In April 2024, the Accra High Court convicted her and sentenced her to 10 years in prison in absentia.
Return to Ghana and Legal Challenge
After spending time outside the country, Mrs. Tamakloe-Attionu returned to Ghana in June 2026 following her extradition from the United States. She was subsequently taken into custody to begin serving the sentence imposed by the High Court. Her lawyers challenged the conviction before the Court of Appeal, arguing against the basis of the earlier judgment. The appellate court subsequently overturned the conviction and acquitted and discharged her, prompting the Attorney-General to seek a stay of execution while considering the next legal steps.
Acquittal Takes Effect Pending Supreme Court Appeal
With the Attorney-General withdrawing the stay application, the Court of Appeal’s acquittal and discharge can now take effect. Although the State intends to pursue the matter before the Supreme Court, Mrs. Tamakloe-Attionu has been released from custody following the latest proceedings. Her release marks a significant development in a case that has attracted considerable public attention because of the allegations involving the management of public funds at MASLOC and the lengthy legal proceedings that followed.
