South Africa files genocide case against Israel
On Friday, South Africa lodged a case at the United Nations’ top court, accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Their submission to the International Court of Justice argues that Israel’s actions are genocidal in nature and intended to destroy the Palestinian people.
South Africa, a vocal critic of Israel’s military campaign, has asked the court to issue an interim order to halt Israel’s military operations in Gaza. Israel swiftly rejected these allegations, calling them baseless and accusing South Africa of exploiting the court for political purposes.
The outcome of the case remains uncertain, but it provides an important opportunity for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to examine Israel’s actions in Gaza under the Genocide Convention.
