Ties with Ghana intact despite anti-gay bill passage -World Bank

The World Bank Group has reaffirmed its strong partnership with Ghana despite the recent passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill by Parliament, dispelling any speculations about a potential reduction in aid and development assistance to the country.

There have been concerns about the financial implications for Ghana if the bill becomes law, with warnings from the Finance Ministry about the possible loss of over $3 billion in World Bank funding for various programs and projects.

However, a spokesperson from the World Bank clarified that the institution does not view the passed bill as a reason to change its cooperation with Ghana on development initiatives. The spokesperson emphasized that the partnership between the World Bank and Ghana remains fruitful.

In response to questions about the bill, the World Bank stated that it does not typically comment on specific legislation and noted that the bill has not yet been signed into law.

It is currently unclear whether the World Bank will take any punitive actions if the bill is fully enacted.
