Historic honour for former Chief Justice
Former Chief Justice of Ghana, Sophia Akuffo, has been installed as the Mmrahene (Legal Chief) of the Akuapem Traditional Area in the Eastern Region. The installation ceremony took place on Wednesday May 20, 2026 during the Awukudae celebrations at the palace of the Okuapehene in Akropong-Akuapem, attracting traditional leaders, legal practitioners, dignitaries, and residents from across the country.

The day’s activities began at Akuffo Fi, the ancestral home of the Akuffo family, before proceeding to the Okuapehene’s palace for the main customary rites. During the colourful ceremony, Sophia Akuffo was formally introduced with the stool name Nana Abena Boafoa Akuffo. Traditional drumming, dancing, and libation marked the occasion as chiefs and elders welcomed her into her new role.

Sophia Akuffo’s installation has been widely viewed as recognition of her remarkable contributions to Ghana’s judiciary and international law.
