Ignore unapproved 20% fare hike– Transport operators
Transport unions dismiss reports of fare increase
Ghana’s recognised road transport operators have rejected reports suggesting that public transport fares will increase by 20 percent from June 2, 2026. The clarification comes amid widespread media reports indicating that commuters should prepare for a fare adjustment. However, transport operators insist that no such decision has been approved through the established channels.
Joint statement sets the record straight
In a joint statement issued on June 1, 2026, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council stated that the purported fare increase is unauthorized.
The two organisations urged the public to disregard the reports with what they described as “the contempt it deserves,” emphasizing that no official announcement has been made regarding any adjustment in transport fares.
Leadership monitoring fuel prices
The statement, signed by Godfred Abulbire and Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, indicated that transport operators are closely monitoring developments in the current fuel pricing window. According to the leadership, any future decision on fare adjustments will be based on prevailing economic conditions and will follow the appropriate procedures. They assured the public that any approved changes would be communicated officially.
Due process was not followed
The transport operators stressed that the previously announced fare increase did not receive the necessary approval and was not discussed with the Ministry of Transport. They noted that the reported adjustment failed to comply with the established fare review protocols agreed upon between the ministry and recognised transport unions, rendering the proposed increase unlawful.
Stakeholders directed to maintain current fares
As part of the directive, all transport unions, drivers, vehicle owners, loading point managers, and other stakeholders have been instructed to continue charging the existing approved fares.
The leadership further cautioned against any unilateral fare increases, urging all parties within the transport sector to adhere strictly to the current fare structure until an official review is conducted and communicated.
Commuters advised to ignore unapproved increases
The transport operators reassured commuters that no authorised fare increment has been sanctioned. They encouraged passengers to remain informed through official communications and to disregard any attempts to impose unapproved fare hikes. The statement reinforces the commitment of recognised transport operators to ensuring transparency and compliance with the agreed fare adjustment procedures.
