Government confirms Dr. Bossman Asare’s resignation
The Government has confirmed that the Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Bossman Asare, has formally notified President John Dramani Mahama of his decision to resign from office effective July 31, 2026.
The announcement was made by Government Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, during a media briefing on Monday, June 15. According to the Minister, Dr. Asare submitted an official resignation letter to the President, expressing his intention to step down after serving in one of Ghana’s most important constitutional institutions.

Return to academia cited as reason
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that Dr. Asare’s decision was motivated by his desire to return to academia and continue his professional career at the University of Ghana. The outgoing Deputy Chairperson indicated in his letter that he intends to resume his academic work as a staff member of the university, where he built his career before joining the Electoral Commission.
The Minister noted that the resignation represents a planned career transition rather than any dispute or controversy within the Commission.

Appreciation for opportunity to serve
Dr. Asare reportedly used the letter to express gratitude to both the President and the people of Ghana for the confidence reposed in him during his tenure. He acknowledged the opportunity to contribute to Ghana’s democratic development through his service at the Electoral Commission and thanked stakeholders for their support throughout his time in office.
The government described his departure as one marked by appreciation and professionalism.

Samuel Tettey proceeds on retirement
In a related development, the second Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Samuel Tettey, has officially proceeded on retirement. Mr. Kwakye Ofosu revealed that Mr. Tettey’s retirement has already set in motion the constitutional and administrative procedures required to fill the vacancy and maintain leadership continuity within the Commission.

Council of State considering replacement
The Minister disclosed that the government has already submitted a nominee to the Council of State for consideration as Mr. Tettey’s replacement. According to him, the Council is currently reviewing the nomination, and an official announcement will be made once the constitutional process has been completed. The move is aimed at ensuring a seamless transition and preserving the operational effectiveness of the Electoral Commission.

Replacement for Dr. Asare to follow
With Dr. Asare set to leave office at the end of July, the government says arrangements will subsequently be made to identify and appoint a successor.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu assured the public that the necessary procedures would be followed to fill the vacancy after Dr. Asare’s departure, ensuring that the Electoral Commission continues to function effectively.

Electoral Commission faces leadership transition
The simultaneous retirement of Samuel Tettey and the impending resignation of Dr. Bossman Asare mark a significant leadership transition within the Electoral Commission. As constitutional processes unfold, attention will focus on the appointment of new deputy chairpersons to help steer the Commission’s work and maintain public confidence in Ghana’s electoral administration.
