Ghana’s World Cup dream ends
Black Stars Bow Out After Narrow Defeat to Colombia
Ghana’s hopes of progressing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end following a hard-fought 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32. An early strike from Jhon Arias proved decisive, as the Black Stars were unable to recover despite a spirited second-half display.
Bright Start Before Early Setbacks
The Black Stars began the match on the front foot and almost grabbed an early breakthrough. Thomas Partey came close with a powerful long-range effort that drifted narrowly wide, signaling Ghana’s attacking intent. However, both teams were soon disrupted by injury concerns. Colombia were forced into an early substitution after striker Jhon Córdoba suffered a groin injury, with Luis Suárez coming on in his place. Ghana also suffered a setback when right-back Marvin Senaya, who initially tried to play through a hamstring injury, was forced off before the 15-minute mark. Alidu Seidu replaced him in defence.
Arias Punishes Ghana
Colombia’s substitute quickly made an impact. Just moments after entering the game, Luis Suárez delivered a precise cross to the far post, where an unmarked Jhon Arias calmly slotted home in the 14th minute to hand the South Americans the lead. The goal shifted the momentum firmly in Colombia’s favour, with the South Americans enjoying more possession and controlling the tempo for much of the first half.
Ati Zigi Keeps Ghana Alive
Colombia continued to threaten as Luis Díaz missed a good opportunity before Lawrence Ati Zigi produced an outstanding save just before the interval, brilliantly denying Johan Mojica’s powerful header from close range.
The Ghana goalkeeper’s heroics ensured the Black Stars remained within touching distance heading into the second half.
Ghana Pushes for a Response
After the break, Ghana showed greater urgency in search of an equaliser. Antoine Semenyo produced the team’s best attacking moment when he burst into space and fired a dangerous low cross across the face of goal, but no teammate was available to convert.
Colombia remained dangerous on the counterattack. Luis Díaz had a goal ruled out for offside before later forcing another excellent save from Ati Zigi after breaking through on goal.
Tactical Changes Fail to Spark Comeback
Seeking fresh energy, Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz introduced Elisha Owusu and Abdul Fatawu in place of Kwasi Sibo and Inaki Williams before later sending on Ernest Nuamah and Prince Adu in an effort to increase the attacking threat.
Despite the substitutions, Ghana struggled to penetrate Colombia’s organised defence. At the other end, Davinson Sánchez headed straight at Ati Zigi from a corner, while substitute Juan Quintero narrowly missed the target with a long-range effort.
World Cup Journey Comes to an End
Ghana threw players forward in the closing stages in search of a dramatic equaliser but rarely troubled Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas. In the end, Jhon Arias’ early goal proved enough to separate the two sides, ending Ghana’s World Cup campaign at the Round of 32. Colombia advanced to the last 16, where they will face Switzerland, while the Black Stars exited the tournament with their dream of World Cup glory brought to an end.
