GFA appoints Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars Head Coach
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially named experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Ghana national football team. The appointment marks the beginning of a fresh chapter as Ghana looks to rebuild and strengthen its position on the global stage.
Coaching change after disappointing results
Queiroz takes over from Otto Addo, who was dismissed in late March after a string of underwhelming performances in international friendlies. Among the most notable setbacks were a heavy 5–1 defeat to Austria national football team and a 2–1 loss to Germany national football team.
Despite these results, Addo’s tenure was not without merit. In his second spell as head coach, he recorded eight wins and nine losses in 22 matches and successfully guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In its official announcement on Monday, the GFA stated that the decision to appoint Queiroz was made by its Executive Council in consultation with key stakeholders. Carlos Queiroz brings a wealth of experience, having managed several national teams including Portugal national football team, Iran national football team, Egypt national football team, Colombia national football team, South Africa national football team, and Oman national football team. He has also guided teams to multiple FIFA World Cup appearances, including South Africa (2002), Portugal (2010), and Iran (2014, 2018, and 2022), showcasing his ability to compete at the highest level.
Club pedigree and elite mentorship
At the club level, Queiroz has managed European giants like Real Madrid. He also served as assistant coach at Manchester United under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, further sharpening his tactical expertise.
Eyes on the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Queiroz is expected to assume his role immediately, with his primary focus on preparing Ghana for the upcoming World Cup. The Black Stars have been drawn into a challenging group alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team.
