Akufo-Addo appoints Freda Prempeh as Sanitation Minister

Following the resignation of Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, President Akufo-Addo has appointed the Minister of state at the presidency, Freda Prempeh, as the new substantive Minister.

The former Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, turned in her resignation on Saturday, July 22, 2023, after some $1 million and other valuable items were stolen from her home in Accra.

A statement from the presidency dated July 25, 2023, disclosed that President Akufo-Addo in consultation with the Ministers for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and Highways has also appointed the Member of Parliament (MP) for Afigya Sekyere East, Mavis Nkansah Boadu as the new Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and MP for Tatale/Sanguli, Thomas Mbomba as the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways.

Cecilia Dapaah is currently being investigated by the Special Prosecutor for keeping such a huge amount of money in her home and how she earned them.

Meanwhile, the theft case is also in court with two of her housekeepers, Patience Botwe (18) and Sarah Agyei (30), standing trial for their alleged involvement in the theft.

The house helps, and their accomplices are to reappear in court on August 2, 2023.

Profile of Hon. Freda Prempeh

Freda Akosua Oheneafrewo Prempeh is a Ghanaian politician, and Member of Parliament in the Seventh Parliament and Eighth Parliament of the fourth Republic of Ghana representing Tano North Constituency in the Ahafo Region, Ghana. She was the Minister of State, for the Ministry of works and housing, Ghana.

Born: January 23, 1966 (age 57 years), Duayaw Nkwanta

Political portfolio: Former Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection of Ghana since 2019

Education: University of Ghana

Hon. Freda Prempeh, is a self-disciplined devoted Public servant of Ghana and a Brands & Communication Expert. She is the Member of Parliament for Tano-North Constituency, a former Deputy Minister for Works and Housing and the Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection.
She obtained her 1st Degree in Business Administration from the University of Ghana. She also has a Masters in Marketing, a second Masters in Media and Public Relation, and is currently pursuing a PhD programme, on the topic, “Exploring the low representation of women in politics” at the Ghana Telecommunication University.
She has been a gender activist for years and founder of “The Ultimate Woman”.

Hon. Freda Prempeh has the aptitude for politics and as such served as Assembly Member for the Lakoo Electoral Area for a period of eight years where she chaired the Women and Children Sub-Committee and the Development Planning Sub-Committee. Prior to becoming a Member of Parliament, she worked with the Prison Service for ten years. She also served on the National Reconciliation Commission as a Public Affairs Officer in 2006.

She got the nod from her constituency to be the MP of the Tano North Constituency in the Ahafo region on the ticket of the NPP in the year 2013, and has since been their Parliamentary representative for 6 years. Through her relentless effort and commitment, she served on the communication committee in Parliament and is currently serving on the Mines and Energy Committee and Government Assurances Committee. She is a development-oriented person and has chalked a lot of successes in her quest to develop her constituency. Health, education and infrastructural development remain her priorities and high on her agenda.

As a sports fanatic and staunch believer of women’s capabilities, she founded the Women Supporters Union of Ghana (WOSUGHA). She was the chairperson of the just ended Women’s Championship, African Cup of Nations, (AFCON) hosted in Ghana. She is an Accredited member of the Institute of Public Relations (IPR, Ghana); an Associate Member of Institute of Public Relations (IPR) Ghana and an Affiliate Member of the Journalists Association (GJA).

Hon. Freda Prempeh has attended a number of workshops and conferences, and received many awards in recognition of her undaunting leadership, dedication and selfless service and also promoting gender issues. She had the award of the best Student in Population Communication on July 31, 1998 from the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

Apart of her busy schedules she has very interesting hobbies which she usually engages in as a way of relaxation. Paramount of them are cooking, dancing, and watching movies and sports.
