Court defers Wontumi’s bail application to Oct 15 after absenteeism
The bail application of former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been adjourned to October 15, 2026. The adjournment means the court will have to wait until the new date before it can consider arguments relating to Wontumi’s request for bail.
Wontumi and Lawyers Absent
The decision to adjourn the matter followed the failure of Chairman Wontumi and his legal team to appear before the court for the scheduled hearing. Wontumi is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence in connection with illegal mining. His bail application is therefore being pursued while he remains in custody.
Deputy Attorney General Present
Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, was present in court when the matter came up. However, with Wontumi and his lawyers absent, the court could not proceed with the scheduled hearing and subsequently fixed October 15, 2026, for the matter to resume.
Bail Hearing to Resume in October
The court is expected to consider the bail application when the case returns on October 15. The next hearing will determine whether the court will proceed to hear the substantive arguments for and against granting Wontumi bail.
Until then, Chairman Wontumi remains in custody, serving his 20-year sentence for illegal mining.
