Int’l Noise Awareness Day: Eco-Conscious Citizens dare tech-savvy youth, young innovators to fight noise pollution

As the world prepares to observe International Noise Awareness Day on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the Eco-Conscious Citizens has announced an ambitious initiative aimed at tackling one of the country’s most persistent environmental issues—noise pollution. The group is calling on tech-savvy young people to step forward with bold, innovative solutions that can help reduce excessive noise levels across Ghana.

A call to innovate: Can technology silence the noise?
At the heart of the campaign is a challenge to young innovators: design a technological tool capable of addressing noise pollution in practical and impactful ways. Among the ideas being floated is the concept of a “reflector” device that could send excessive noise “back to sender,” as well as systems that can automatically jam or suppress sound once it exceeds limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Participants are encouraged to draw on their creativity, technical skills, and imagination to develop solutions that could be piloted in real-world settings. A cash prize awaits any invention deemed effective and scalable.

Noise pollution: A growing public health concern
The initiative comes against the backdrop of rising concern over noise pollution in Ghanaian communities. From places of worship and event centres to drinking bars and vehicles fitted with loudspeakers, many citizens face constant exposure to excessive noise. Health experts have long warned that prolonged exposure to high noise levels can lead to serious conditions, including stress, sleep disruption, and even cardiovascular disease. For many residents, the issue is not just about discomfort—it is a matter of long-term wellbeing.

Gaps in enforcement and response
Eco-Conscious Citizens also highlighted systemic challenges that make it difficult to address noise complaints effectively. Notably, there is no dedicated hotline for reporting noise disturbances outside regular working hours. In many cases, authorities responsible for enforcing regulations are either unavailable or unable to resolve complaints promptly. This gap leaves many citizens feeling powerless, forced to endure the effects of noise pollution without adequate support.

Encouraging proactive citizenship
The group is urging Ghanaians to take a more proactive stance in protecting their health and environment. By engaging young people—particularly those with technological expertise—the initiative seeks to empower communities to become part of the solution rather than passive victims.

Eco-Conscious Citizens Group Marks International Noise Awareness Day By Throwing A Challenge To Techy Young People

Wednesday, April 29, 2026 is International Noise Awareness Day.

The Eco-Conscious Citizens environmental group is marking International Noise Awareness Day by inviting tech savvy young people to design a technological tool to deal with noise pollution. Can you design a “Reflector” that sends noise “back to sender”? Can you use technology to send a jamming signal to stop sound above Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) permissible sound levels? Use your skills and creativity, imagination and knowledge to come up with an invention that will provide much needed relief from Noise Pollution.

There is a cash prize for a successful invention that can be piloted.

Ghanaians are constantly bombarded with noise pollution from places of worship, event centres, drinking bars, vehicles mounted with loud speakers, and this has a detrimental effect on our health.

It is of concern that there is no dedicated number to call outside working hours for noise teams to deal with noise nuisance complaints. In addition, duty bearers are often unable or unwilling to resolve noise nuisance complaints.

Ghanaians must either suffer the health effects of noise pollution exposure, which includes cardiovascular disease, or be •pro-active• citizens and protect their health.
