[Opinion] Dapaah’s huge forex hoarding is accountability test case to all NPP presidential aspirants

Recent Chronicle court report on the Minister of Sanitation, Hon Cecelia Abana Dapaah’s stolen money angered Ghanaians so much that many don’t care about her ordeal as much as they do about public office accountability.

The report which, went viral in few hours has resurrected memories of Former Deputy Minister of Communications, Ms Victoria Hamah’s financial aspiration tape case and how members of the then Opposition New Patriotic Party used it to campaign against John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress.

Citizens are asking that if even in that case where physical money wasn’t involved and there were no allegations of her hoarding monies in her house, Akufo-Addo and Bawumia led NPP vehemently fought for investigations into her finances and assets, then, the ruling NPP government has no excuse not to launch serious financial and assets investigations into Dapaah’s.

Even NPP Party grassroots are livid considering how they’re suffering economic excruciating hardships while their officials are hoarding millions of United States Dollars, British Pounds and Euros in their bedrooms.

More bizzare, recently, government had cause to castigate citizens who were hoarding forex against the Ghana Cedi and urged all to stop that to strengthen the Cedi. Not knowing their own officials are those hoarding USD and other currencies as Cecelia Dapaah’s case has revealed.

This is thus a big test to all NPP presidential aspirants campaigning ahead of their 2023 primaries.

How would they handle Celelia Dapaah’s case bearing in mind how their party condemned John Mahama’s administration and called for investigations into Victoria Hamah’s financial aspiration in politics?

How they respond to the prevailing issue should inform the grassroots and delegates and Ghanaians in general about their commitment to transparency and accountability in government. Their silence over it could mean they’re worse in this regard.

And, that should inform the electoral choices of the nation.

Media people should ask the aspirants critical questions on this to help the nation decide.

As for Akufo-Addo and Bawumia, we know how they’ve treated such issues since 2017 so they’re out. Otherwise, Bawumia should prove his worth and how different he’s from Akufo-Addo with his response to Cecelia Dapaah’s case.

We saw how a mere expression of financial aspiration by a Deputy Minister was handled by John Mahama.
