Prez Mahama urged to reconsider re-assignment of Col. Buah

A Plea from the Frontlines of Environmental Protection
Citizens and Community Groups Raise Concern
Eco-Conscious Citizens, Environmental Campaigners, and the Atronsu Youth & Farmers Against Illegal and Small Scale Mining Association have jointly appealed to His Excellency the President to reconsider the re-assignment of Col. Buah. According to the groups, the decision comes at a critical moment in Ghana’s ongoing struggle against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. They believe the timing of the move could weaken the progress made in protecting vulnerable communities and natural resources.
NAIMOS’ Difficult but Courageous Mission
The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has reportedly operated under difficult and challenging conditions. Despite these obstacles, the organization has achieved notable successes in the fight against illegal mining. Environmental advocates say NAIMOS has distinguished itself by speaking openly about interference affecting the performance of its duties. This willingness to confront obstacles directly, they argue, has strengthened public confidence in the institution and demonstrated a serious commitment to environmental protection.
Concerns Over the Re-assignment of Col. Buah
Campaigners fear that re-assigning Col. Buah at this stage could undermine the gains already made. They say the move risks sending the wrong signal about the country’s determination to tackle irresponsible mining activities.
Many believe that influential individuals affected by NAIMOS’ operations may be uncomfortable with the agency’s effectiveness. For this reason, the groups are urging the President to publicly reaffirm his commitment to the anti-galamsey fight by reversing the proposed re-assignment.
The Atronsu Intervention
One of the most notable actions under Col. Buah’s leadership was NAIMOS’ intervention in Atronsu. Responding to appeals from residents, the agency moved to protect the Atronsu landscape and stream : the community’s only source of drinking water. The operation reportedly led to the removal of excavators and the arrest of illegal miners operating in the area. Residents and activists viewed the intervention as a significant victory for environmental protection and community survival.
Rising Tensions in Atronsu
The concern over the re-assignment has deepened because illegal miners are said to be regrouping and preparing to resume operations in Atronsu.
At the same time, five activists known locally as the “Atronsu5”: are currently facing prosecution for allegedly causing damage to excavators used in illegal mining activities. The activists have denied all charges against them.
Community members fear that the current developments could discourage local resistance against environmental destruction and embolden those engaged in illegal mining.
Appreciation for NAIMOS’ Service
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the leadership changes, the groups expressed gratitude to NAIMOS for its service and dedication to protecting the Atronsu stream and surrounding environment. They maintain that the agency’s actions helped preserve a vital water source for the community and demonstrated the importance of decisive intervention against illegal mining.
Final Appeal to the President
The appeal ends with a respectful but firm request to His Excellency the President to reconsider the decision to re-assign Col. Buah. For the environmental groups, reversing the decision would not only strengthen public confidence in the fight against galamsey, but also reassure vulnerable communities that their concerns and livelihoods remain a national priority.
